Welcome to occasional ramblings by me, the owner of Beattie, a Bedlington terrier. I try to train her in Obedience, without too much
success, but we love walking, especially in the Lake District ... where the
aim is to complete the
214 Challenge!
Canisfamiliaris
is a
Latin word meaning domestic dog.

Beattie was born on 16th May 2006, one of five puppies in the litter.
She finally arrived at her new home on 18th July 2006 when she was
just nine weeks old. She is a Suffolk Blue
Bedlington
terrier. She weighs in at 7.7 kg. She loves food, treats, walks (preferably off-lead) and sleeping on the bed
(when she can get away with it!). She detests walks in the rain, grooming and having her tail touched!
Alfred Wainwright Alfred Wainwright (1907 - 1991) is the 'guru' of many Lake District
fellwalkers. He devised and wrote seven Pictorial Guides to the Lake
District fells from 1952 - 1965. In the guides he describes routes of
ascent and descent for each of the
214 fells. He gives details of the
view from the summit as well as connecting ridge routes to neighbouring
fells. There have been many guide book writers, but none approaching
the genius of 'AW', as he is known. The challenge for all lovers of
hill walking in the Lake District is to climb the 214 'Wainwrights'.
When AW died in 1991, his ashes were scattered by the quiet waters of
Innominate Tarn on his favourite fell, Haystacks.
The Wainwright Society,
formed in 2002, exists to keep alive the fellwalking traditions promoted by
Alfred Wainwright through his work, together with his vision about caring
for the hills.
'The fleeting hour of life of those who love the hills is quickly spent, but
the hills are eternal. Always there will be the lonely ridge, the
dancing beck, the silent forest; always there will be the exhilaration of
the summits. These are for the seeking, and those who seek and find
while there is yet time will be blessed both in mind and body.' Alfred Wainwright The Western Fells (Some Personal Notes in Conclusion)

'AW' Quote of the week
‘[The Langdale Pikes]
look down on the valley of Great Langdale like a pride of crouching
lions: they look fierce, hostile, repelling, yet they are greatly
loved by devotees who return time after time … for another friendly
wrestle with the giants of the group.’

Favourite Lakeland Mountains p. 149
